Dental Implantology is not a specialty. Every Dentist is allowed to place dental implants, however the majority of dental implants are placed by Periodontist's, Oral maxiofacial Surgeon's and Prosthodontist. In the United States you have to differentiate between restorative implant dentistry and surgical implant dentistry.

Common protocol is the patient being referred to a dentist (Periodontist, Oral Maxiofacial Surgeon or a Dentist who specializes in placement of dental implants). After the placement of the dental implant the implant has to heal,  meaning the implant has to integrate with the surrounding bone (Osseointegrate)

After the healing process which takes under ideal condition about six weeks the dental implant (s) is than restored with a crown, bridge or an overdenture. (Restorative Dental Implant Dentistry)
