Dental Care During Pregnancy:

New evidence shows that it may be more important than ever not to cancel the appointment with your dental hygienist.

Dental health can affect your pregnancy. Besides visiting your dentist and having your teeth cleaned every six months, brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily is an essential part of your health routine during pregnancy. And if you develop any signs of dental problems, it’s crucial to see your dentist immediately.

If you bottle-feed, do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or any sugary liquids. The opportunity for tooth decay to develop increases while these liquids stay in the mouth (bottle mouth). Remove the bottle as soon as your baby is done feeding or is asleep. Breast-feeding your infant to sleep is safe.

Your baby's first tooth usually erupt (break through) at about 6 months. Many babies experience some discomfort during teething. All babies (primary) teeth erupt (break through) between the ages of six month to the ages of three years. The permanent teeth begin to emerge at the age of six years. It is recommended that you start cleaning your child’s teeth as soon as the teeth emerge with a soft moist cloth or gauze. By the time you child is around one year old use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste and brush your children’s teeth until the child can do this by them self. During this time give your child good nutritious food that include fruit, whole grain and vegetable to avoid cavities. For the health of your child’s teeth please try to avoid foods that are high in sugar and processed carbohydrates, such as pastries, pasta and white bread. Discuss your child’s fluoride needs with your dentist.

Dental Care From 6 Years to 16 Years:

By now your child has been seeing a dentist regularly for years. Continue with your usual schedule. If your child has not yet seen a dentist, make an appointment for an exam.

What Your Child Can Do:

Your child should be brushing his or her own teeth in the morning and in the evening. Do not forget to floss at least once a day.
